EUROSTAR Conference 2020

About EUROSTAR

This is a testing conference organized each year since 1993. The first time I’ve attended the conference in 2017, in Copenhagen. It has had a good vibe and all workshops and talks have had a great quality.

This year, due to the COVID-19 virus, it was a fully online event which was using the Hopin and Zoom technologies for streaming.
Here is a summary about the most interesting workshop I’ve attended.

Tutorial: The green traveller – Prioritizing your backlog to make an impact by Derk-Jan de Grood

Tester should be involved in Roadmap planning? Yes, it would be beneficial.
As a tester, Derk was on a planning meeting with Scrum master & other managers, his experience was pretty bad one time when he was basically “kicked off” from the meeting because of his questions. His opinion is that tester should participate on these planning meetings.

Green traveller is a fantasy project.
It’s an organization which provides environment friendly travelling solutions like provides train connections.
Using this solution, you can earn green miles (loyalty system).
The site has the “Get out of the plane, take the train” slogen.

The prioritizing of backlog was done in smaller group of 6 people. Value range linked to the priority were :

  • Highest value > 80
  • Lowest value > 20

Groups did the intial sorting based on this value (priority)

On epic level, the following contributed to the priority:

  • money needed to implement
  • time needed to implement
  • compliance to business goal
  • impact on customer

Then, the customer journey has been determined which made it clear that not only the business goal should be taken into account. The reason is that there were teams with lower value items. They will need to be motivated somehow too so they need work. A very good metaphor for this: There will be someone who is painting the fence until the house burns down.

Take away: Not always the business value which should be taken into account which item should be worked off first

ArchiCAD to Cinema 4D export but no textures?

I was spending my long vacation recently and I’ve got an urgent request regarding the ArchiCAD to Cinema 4D export workflow. An artist got a c4d scene which was exported from ArchiCAD but all textures were black when he opened the scene in Cinema 4D. This was not the first ‘complain’ about an export where something went wrong.

But in eventually, it was a user error on the client side. Often clients don’t notice the ‘tex’ folder next to the c4d file and forget to send it along with the c4d file to the 3D visualization artist.

Here, in this post, I wrote about the different export methods to transfer geometry from ArchiCAD to Cinema 4D.
The most common way to export a c4d scene is from Window menu > Palettes > Photorendering Settings then clicking on the arrow next to the photograph icon and select ‘Export to CINEMA 4D’ on the palette.
Next, the save dialog lets the user specify the file path. It’s a common practice to save onto the desktop or in a non-empty folder. At this point it’s easy to miss the ‘tex’ folder.

If you are an artist and your client sends you only a c4d file, check first in Cinema 4D Window menu > Project Asset Inspector (version R21+ or Texture Manager in earlier versions) if there is any missing texture.
If there is one, don’t hesitate to ask for the ‘tex’ folder from your client.

ArchiCAD – Cinema 4D Exchange Add-on

Here, in a previous post, I’ve mentioned about this plugin already.

Now, I post a video which shows the capabilities of this tool:

VR & AR: how important is it for architects

Before I jump in into this topic, I want to have a personal note about last week’s meeting.

I was very happy to take part into a meeting between Nemetschek companies, Nvidia and MAXON employees. This year was special for me, since it was the first time I had to organise this with my family as well. Before the first day of this event, I had mixed feelings. I was wondering how my one year old daughter will react to my absence? It’s not a big deal in the end, I can see now. We’ve had even a stronger bond between us once I got home at the afternoon.

For a long time, I’m seeing the need for exporting from BIM software to game engines. The main reason is the quick access to create VR content.

But is it real VR what architects need? Or is it more like an automatic (guided) fly-through with hotspots and not an interactive ‘real’ VR environment?
And what about AR? Is this still a niche market?

This week, I’ve heard about possible use-cases:
– Building inspection is done using a mobile device on site to check if the structure was built as it was planned.
– to do design review for designers
– to present the design to clients
– to measure

Although this is still a niche area, I expect a boom in the available software solutions for AR. In my opinion Augmented reality could be applied to the needs in the AEC sector even better than VR could be.
This topic is widely discussed for a long time but now, I think we are closer to a solution where both hardware and software are in a state to provide a useful platform for these needs.
